Sodium Picosulfate belongs to a group of medicines called Laxatives and is used for relief of constipation. Sodium Picosulfate liquid gently stimulates the muscles of the Bowel (large intestine). This brings predictable, overnight relief from constipation, helping to return the body to its natural rhythm.

The cause of constipation is often not known. It can be associated with: Sudden change of diet, loss of “tone” of the bowel muscles in older people, pregnancy, medicines such as Morphine or Codeine, having to stay in bed for a long time and lack of exercise. Whatever the cause, constipation can be uncomfortable. It may make you feel bloated and heavy or generally “off colour”. Sometimes it causes headaches. These healthy tips are recommended to try to prevent constipation happening: Eat a balanced diet including fresh fruit and vegetables, drink enough water so that you do not become dehydrated, keep up your exercise and stay fit and make time to empty your bowels when your body tells you.

Dose

  5–10 ml once daily to be taken at bedtime.

Warnings

As with all laxatives, Sodium Picosulfate should not be taken on a continuous daily basis for more than five days without investigating the cause of constipation.

Sodium Picosulfate should not be taken by children under 12 years without medical supervision, ie on prescription.

Sodium Picosulfate Liquid contains 5.9 vol % ethanol i.e. up to 480 mg per dose, equivalent to 12 ml beer, 5 ml wine per dose and can therefore be harmful for those suffering from alcoholism and should be taken into account in pregnant or breast-feeding women, children and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease, or epilepsy.
